Downton Leisure Centre – “Reality Check” Report
C3 Consultants were appointed by Downton Parish Council, Wiltshire
County Council, Salisbury District Council and The Trafalgar School
at Downton to investigate the development options and opportunities
that may exist for the Downton Leisure Centre. This preliminary
report focuses on the broad options for the future reprovision of
the Downton Leisure Centre, which is approaching the end of its
economic life expectancy and faces a deficit funding shortfall.
This first stage report is intended to provide the stakeholders
with a ‘’Reality check’’ which identifies
key issues, opportunities, and risks - and provides an independent
view on the relative viability of each of four broad options currently
under consideration.

PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS SPORTS CENTRE FUTURE
A public meeting in January gave Downton residents a chance to
hear about ideas to redevelop sports facilities in the village to
secure the long term future of existing facilities and provide new
facilities on a single site.
The meeting follows a review of challenges in the long term financing
of the BWSCA sports centre in Wick Lane which has coincided with
plans to build a new sports hall at Trafalgar School. The school
lacks dedicated sports facilities and has been seeking ways to provide
a hall that will allow a greater variety of sports to be offered
to pupils.
Although the ideas are at an early stage, a meeting between local
councillors, Robert Key M.P. and officers from the district and
county council has concluded that one option might be to develop
a larger joint use centre on the school site. This would bring all
facilities together with the potential for extra sports facilities
and a youth centre.
