Keeping track of public services in
Downton made even easier
You can keep bang up to date on the council services that affect
our area thanks to new technology.
Salisbury District Council’s website – www.salisbury.gov.uk
– now boasts a new high tech system which means users can
find out about the things that are happening in their locality,
from planning applications to who their councillor is.
Called GIS (Geographical Information Systems) this new system enables
people to find out the information relevant to them by just typing
in a street name or postcode.
So how does it work?
Currently, the system covers planning applications, councillor
information, recycling sites, conservation areas and listed buildings.
By going to the following pages, you can type in your street name
or postcode and find out where your nearest recycling site is, what
planning applications are current near your home, is your street
in a conservation area and where are the nearest listed buildings
to you:
www.salisbury.gov.uk/conservation
www.salisbury.gov.uk/planning-applications
www.salisbury.gov.uk/councillors
www.salisbury.gov.uk/recycling-sites
This information can also be viewed on an interactive map.
And residents who have an RSS feedreader on their home computers
can also use this system to receive alerts on new planning applications
near their home. RSS – or Really Simple Syndication –
is a technology that enables you to receive news or updates from
websites without having to keep visiting the site.
The council is hoping to continue to expand this service so that
much of the geographical information it holds on the website can
be searched in this way.

4 we have a representative from SDC to deal with your needs.
Activities
Downton Library runs various activities throughout the year. The
‘Big Wild Read’ is always a favourite and runs during
the summer holidays. A mission for the young people to read six
books in order to claim their certificate. Look out for our next
reading mission in July 2008.
Display Board
Our interactive display board is a means for the younger generation
to display their creative talents. We usually set a theme, this
summer has been Harry Potter, and have various colourings the children
can take away and return for our display. Our new autumn display
is about to begin so pick up your colouring sheets and go crazy!
Harry Potter Quiz
This has been a great success throughout the summer with twenty
questions meandered through the library to test our readers knowledge.
Congratulations go to Toby and Jessica Lock who got all twenty questions
correct and were the winning ticket pulled from the pot.
Thank You
Many thanks to all those children who coloured a carriage for our
Harry Potter train. We nearly filled the back wall! In the run up
to Christmas – yes it’s nearly that time again –
we will be trying to give Santa an elongated sleigh to pull. So
get those colouring pencils at the ready and pick up your colouring
sheets from the Library.
